PESHAWAR: Missile bang sparks panic in Peshawar

By Ali Hazrat Bacha

PESHAWAR, Jan 26: Some unidentified persons on Friday night fired rocket from an unknown location which landed on a road in Phase-6 of the posh Hayatabad locality of the provincial capital creating panic, however, no causality was reported.

A police official told Dawn that the rocket was fired about 1.30am which created deep crater on the road.

He said that splinters of the rocket were collected and investigation was underway, adding that the rocket fell with a big bang and residents ran out of their houses.

The rocket’s location and target, the official said, could not be identified immediately but it seemed that it might have been fired from the Khyber Agency. “Targeting innocent people is a matter of more serious nature,” he said.

Recently, another rocket had landed in Phase-2 of Hayatabad that had damaged the wall of a doctor’s house.

Meanwhile, in the lower courts, the people got panicked when some unidentified people, through a telephone call, informed the court staff that an explosive device had been planted on the premises of the courts.

Following the information, the court staff and litigants came out of the buildings. Police and officials of the bomb disposal squad were called, who gave clearance after searching the entire area thoroughly.

It has been learnt that some senior lawyers including President District Bar Association Maulana Shamsul Haq had received some threat-letters from unidentified militants who had asked them to stop practicing English law in the courts within three days otherwise they would be blown up.

President Peshawar High Court Bar Association Abdul Latif Afridi had also received similar letters recently. Some judicial officials reportedly got threat-letters but they did not make them public, the sources added.

In the meantime, another explosion occurred at Shuba Bazaar when a CNG tank at a local workshop exploded with a bang causing panic among the residents of the area.

Reports about a bomb explosion in Saddar area also continued to pour in newspaper offices but police denied it. A high-ranking police official said that news about explosions in different areas of the city were just rumours.
