CENTURION, Jan 21: Left-hander J.P. Duminy hit an undefeated 79 as South Africa scored 176-4 to defeat West Indies by six wickets on Sunday in the first One-day International.
South Africa won with two of its 36 overs to spare in reply to West Indies’ 175 all out from 35.5 overs.
Duminy, who scored a career-best, featured in three partnerships after the home team was reduced to 4-2. He put on 55 with Jacques Kallis for the third wicket, a 59-run partnership with Ontong for the fourth wicket and an unbroken stand of 58 with Mark Boucher which gave South Africa victory.
Earlier, Darren Sammy hit 51 off 51 balls to guide West Indies after South African captain Graeme Smith won the toss and sent West Indies in to bat.
Wickets fell at regular intervals after that, and West Indies slipped to 81-6 before Sammy got together with Runako Morton.
The pair put on 69 in 12 overs before Morton was run out for 41 to a good throw from Shaun Pollock in the deep.
