ISLAMABAD, Jan 19: A joint investigation team, which is probing into the alleged suicide attack on former federal minister and Pakistan Muslim League (PML-Q) candidate Ijazul Haq in Bhawalnagar last December, has identified the two bombers and suspected one of them of having links with a banned militant outfit and receiving training in Afghanistan, Dawn has learnt.

A source told this reporter that the investigators in their report identified the bombers as Kaleemullah and Sanaullah, both belonging to Bahawalnagar district.

Kaleemullah is thought to be a member of a banned group who received militant training in Afghanistan during 90s.

The investigators said an explosive device believed to be carried by two motorcycle riders exploded in Harooonabad, Bahawalnagar district, on December 30, 2007 causing damage to nearby houses.

“No crater was noticed on the spot but the motorcycle and two suspected terrorists were blown into pieces,” the report said.

It said later two heads, three limbs and some body parts were recovered from the blast site.

The bomb disposal squad suggested that the device contained 3.5kg explosive with a battery powered detonator. The scene of the blast was located close to the election office of Ijazul Haq, who is running in the election in NA-91 constituency.

An imambargah was also situated in the same vicinity where the explosion occurred, however, no damage was done.

The source said the investigation into the suicide attack had also suggested that prominent politicians, who supported the government action against Al Qaeda, Taliban and Lal Masjid in Islamabad, might also be facing similar threat.

They have been advised to adopt precautionary measures.
