‘A big shadow on athletics’

SALVO (North Carolina), Jan 18: Marion Jones’s prison sentence for lying to federal agents about her steroid use has cast a large shadow over track and field, double sprint champion Tyson Gay said on Thursday.

“It put a dark cloud over the sport,” Gay said during teleconference naming him the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) sportsman of the year.

“She was the hugest female athlete in the world, pretty much of all time,” Gay said of fellow American sprinter Jones, who was sentenced to six months in prison last week.

“But we have other young stars rising right now looking forward to replacing her,” Gay added, “and that’s what I am looking forward to. It’s no easy task though.”—Reuters
