SHIKARPUR, Jan 18: A survey committee, which was constituted by the district government to assess the losses caused to public property in the district during the violence after Benazir Bhutto’s assassination on Dec 27, has sent its report to the Sindh relief commissioner.
According to the committee’s report, there was a loss of approximately Rs 45.32 million. This does not include the damages caused to utility stores and other private properties in the district.
The report said that 80 per cent properties belonging to the district council, including the council hall, its entire furniture, echo sound system, nine split air-conditioners, two window air-conditioners, a false-ceiling, 22 ceilings and bracket fans, a stabilizer, five telephone sets, electricity network, three photocopying machines, two computer sets, two TV sets, two VCRs, one refrigerator and two fax machines were burnt.
Likewise, furniture, a window air-conditioner and three ceiling fans of the office of the zila nazim were also burnt and damaged while the office of the district naib nazim was partially damaged and the accounts office and its records and five vehicles were gutted. The loss was estimated to be Rs 7.50 million.
The report further said that losses to the damaged property belonging to the union council Sehwani, Shikarpur railway station, PIA office, mukhtiarkar estate office Shikarpur, mukhtiarkar revenue office Shikarpur, Edhi office, HBL, First Women Bank Shikarpur, UBL, UBL Khanpur, NBP Shikarpur, ABL Shikarpur, National Savings Centre Shikarpur, offices of the taluka municipal administration Khanpur, district officer education secondary and higher secondary male and female, EDO education, EDO agriculture, EDO health, deputy manager operations Hesco Shikarpur, PTCL Exchange Garhi Yasin and Shikarpur, Qadir Bux Bedal Library, NBP Garhi Yasin and the Civil Court Khanpur were also assessed.
The figures for damaged private properties were being collected for paying of compensation.
According to district government sources, the assessment report of the damaged public property worth Rs 45.32 million was sent to the Sindh relief commissioner.
