LONDON, Jan 17: Newcastle United marked the arrival of Kevin Keegan as their new manager with a thumping 4-1 win over Championship (second division) Stoke City in an FA Cup third round replay at St James’ Park on Wednesday.
Keegan, 56, who was named as Newcastle’s new manager just hours before kick-off, watched his new club storm to a well- deserved victory over Stoke with goals from Michael Owen, Claudio Cacapa, James Milner and Damien Duff.
Newcastle now travel to Arsenal for a fourth round tie at the end of the month by which time Keegan will have taken control of the side which was managed by caretaker boss Nigel Pearson on Wednesday.
Keegan is expected to take charge of Newcastle for the first time in Saturday’s Premier League match against Bolton Wanderers.
Minor league club Havant & Waterlooville, who play in the sixth tier of English soccer, scored a huge upset with a 4-2 replay win over League One (third division) leaders Swansea City at their tiny Westleigh Park ground in Hampshire.
They face Liverpool at Anfield in the next round in a tie that could earn them almost 1 million pounds ($2 million) in revenues.
Havant raced into a 3-0 lead after 37 minutes, but Swansea, who missed a penalty just before halftime, reduced the arrears to 3-2 before the non-league side scored a fourth through Tom Jordan after 65 minutes to seal the best result in their history.Manchester City also advanced into the last 32 with a 1-0 win over West Ham United with Elano heading the only goal of the all-Premier League clash after 72 minutes. City travel to Championship side Sheffield United in the next round.
Keegan arrived to take his seat in the directors’ box at St James’ Park just after Newcastle took the lead with a scrambled eighth-minute goal from Owen and he looked delighted when they went further ahead with a Cacapa header after 31 minutes.
The Newcastle fans gave him a resounding welcome at the start of his third spell at the club following his stint as a player in the early 1980s and his previous spell as manager in the mid-1990s.
“It’s nice to be home,” Keegan told Sky Sports News as he arrived at the ground.
The only blot on a memorable evening for Newcastle was the dismissal of Emre Belozoglu for a high retaliatory challenge on Stoke’s John Eustace after 31 minutes. Even Stoke’s late consolation from Liam Lawrence a minute from time did nothing to spoil the party atmosphere.
