Israeli army officer jailed over bid to spy for Iran
JERUSALEM: An Israeli court on Thursday sentenced an army psychiatrist convicted of trying to sell secrets to Iran to five years in jail.
Major David Shamir contacted “hostile elements”, including the Iranian Foreign Ministry, through the Internet and by fax, and offered to provide classified army documents about the medical corps and wartime deployment plans, court papers said.
Passing sentence, the Tel Aviv District Court said Shamir had been motivated by greed. Court documents noted that he had not actually passed any information to Iran, an avowed enemy of Israel.—Reuters
