Quake hits Andaman islands

NEW DELHI, Jan 14: A magnitude 5.6 undersea earthquake struck India's remote Andaman islands region on Monday, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said.

There was no threat of a tsunami, an Indian official said, adding no casualties or damage had been reported.

The quake was centred 140 km south of Port Blair, the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar islands, the USGS said on its website. The depth was given as 30 km.

The USGS had initially measured the quake at 6.0.—Reuters
