People’s vote to strengthen democracy: Zardari

By M.B. Kalhoro

NAUDERO, Jan 13: Pakistan People’s Party co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari has appealed to people to actively participate in the elections and use their votes for the party of Benazir Bhutto to strengthen democracy in the country.

“It will be the best revenge for the assassination of Benazir Bhutto who fought for people’s rights,” he said.

Addressing leaders and activists at a meeting of the executive committee of the PPP Sindh chapter here on Sunday, he said his party would not back out of its demand for a probe into the assassination of Ms Bhutto by a United Nations commission. He said that if the government rejected the demand, the future PPP government would formally request the world body to probe the murder.

He asked the party leaders to kick off the election campaign, mobilise masses and convert the grief into courage. He appealed to people to use their votes as a tool to defeat parties backed by the Musharraf regime.

Mr Zardari advised the party workers to remain in polling stations till the announcement of results to check rigging.

“It is only the strength of people and their power with which we can stop rigging and foil the designs of anti-democratic forces.”
