Eight Afghan policemen killed in attack

KANDAHAR: Dozens of Taliban militants stormed a police post in southern Afghanistan on Sunday, killing eight policemen, an official said.

The attack took place in Kandahar province’s Maywand district, which has been known as a Taliban stronghold for years, police official Sadullah Khan said.

After killing the officers, who were manning a checkpoint on a key road, the rebels took two vehicles and several weapons before retreating, Khan added.

“Eight policemen were martyred. This was a big loss,” he said.

Khan blamed the attack on remnants of the Taliban.—AFP
