KUWAIT: Unknown assailants smashed the windows of about 20 bookshops in Kuwait over the weekend in what the government said looked like an attempt to incite sectarian clashes.

Interior Minister Sheikh Jaber al-Khaled al-Sabah told the official news agency KUNA on Sunday the culprits were trying to “undermine security and provoke strife”.

Newspapers said up to 20 shops that sell a Muslim sect books had been attacked or defaced on Friday and Saturday.

“The authorities are not sparing any effort to stop this,” the minister said.—Reuters
