Fazlullah aide reported held

By Hameedullah Khan

MINGORA, Jan 11: Security forces on Friday claimed arresting head of a militant organisation working for Maulana Fazlullah from a hospital in Saidu Sharif.

The so-called ‘commander’ of the ‘Shaheen Force’ known only as ‘Dr Khan’ is said to be a pharmacist by profession.

He is reported to have been arrested during a raid on the Sena Hospital, along with four relatives. The raid was organised after security forces received credible information about their presence. The ‘commander’ was stated to be a close aide of Maulana Fazlullah and treated militants injured in clashes. He and his associates had come to the hospital for a medical check-up, the sources said.

Sources said that the detainees were being interrogated at a secret location. The administration did not release their names.

According to some reports, Maulan Fazlullah has been seen in the upper reaches of Swat valley. He addressed a ‘sermon’ on his FM radio channel a few days ago, asking the people of Swat to be ready for “all kinds of sacrifices” for the enforcement of Shariah.

Security forces are said to have encircled forces loyal to the cleric and preparations are under way for final assault to clear the area of militants. Maulana Fazlullah’s supporters had fled from lower parts of the district and regrouped in the upper reaches of the valley.

Meanwhile, curfew remains in place in sensitive areas, including Sherpalam, Choprial, Nemgolai, Shakardara, Lower and Upper Banda, Kanju and Wanai bridge. In other areas, curfew remained relaxed during the day.
