Amir Khan fined for speeding

LONDON, Jan 8: British boxer Amir Khan was fined 1,000 pounds (1,970 dollars) on Monday and banned from driving for six weeks for speeding on a motorway.

A police officer who chased Amir in his BMW6 series convertible on New Year’s Eve 2006 said his speedometer was “off the clock” at 155 miles per hour (250kph), at the hearing in Rochdale court in northern England.

The 21-year-old Commonwealth lightweight champion denied the charge, but admitted during the trial that his speed may have reached 75mph – just over the speed limit on British motorways of 70mph.

Judge Pamela Baldwin said there was not enough evidence to prove he was driving at over 100mph but said she was satisfied that it was in excess of 70mph.

Amir, regarded as the best young prospect in British boxing and the 2004 Olympic silver medallist, was cleared in October of dangerous driving over an accident which left a pedestrian with a broken leg.—AFP
