HUNZA, Jan 6: Heavy floods on Sunday caused closure of the Karakorum Highway (KKH) at Passu, about 50 kilometers from here, disrupting traffic.

According to the area people, the flooding was caused by bursting of a lake underneath the 14km long Passu glacier. According to them such floods were a phenomena occurring in summer or rainy season. They recalled that a similar incident had happened some 30 years ago.

Though volunteers and rescue teams were on the scene however they could not do any thing to change the direction of the flood or minimise the loss.

A bridge on the KKH is under threat of being washed away by the gushing waters, the residents feared and urged the government to take immediate steps to rectify the situation.
