PM hopeful of poll code adherence

Published January 6, 2008

LAHORE, Jan 5: Caretaker Prime Minister Muhammadmian Soomro says participation of all political parties in general election is an encouraging sign for the ongoing political process and will strengthen democratic institutions in the country.

He said this while talking to Governor Khalid Maqbool at the Governor’s House here on Saturday evening, says a press note issued by PM Secretariat (camp office) here.

Mr Soomro said politicians’ maturity had improved the political atmosphere as well as the general law and order situation in the country.

He expressed the confidence that they would continue to follow the code of conduct to ensure peaceful elections.

The prime minister said a commission had been formed to assess the damages, which would perform its obligation impartially and in a transparent manner so that those who suffered on account of recent disturbances could be genuinely compensated.

He said the commission would require support from all the provincial governments as well as the people in order to perform its duties. —APP
