Sindh win four titles : Badminton

KARACHI, Jan 1: Karachi-based Mahrukh Essa and Monisha Kotia claimed double crowns apiece as Sindh returned with four titles in the third National juniors’ badminton championship which concluded at the Jinnah Stadium in Islamabad on Monday.

Displaying superior skills, Sindh’s defending champion Mahrukh inflicted a 21-16, 18-21, 22-20 defeat on Punjab’s Aqsa to retain the girls’ under-19 singles title.

Later she teamed up with Monisha Kotia to notch up a straight 21-17, 21-15 victory over Aqsa and Khizra of Punjab to clinch the doubles title.

Monisha also shone in the girls’ under-16 singles when she prevailed over Mehwish Zaman 21-15, 21-11 in an all-Sindh final to retain her title.

The duo of Monisha and Mehwish, however, went down in the under-16 doubles final to Punjab’s Anila and Khizra 16-21, 18-21.

Sindh’s fourth title came in the boys’ under-19 singles when last year’s runner-up Ali Mehdi made amends handing NWFP’s Murad Ali a 21-17, 17-21, 21-18 defeat.

Girls’ U-19 doubles: Mahrukh Essa/Monisha Kotia (Sindh) bt Aqsa Razzaq/Khizra (Punjab) 21-17, 21-15.

Girls’ U-16 singles: Monisha Kotia (Sindh) bt Mehwish Zaman (Sindh) 21-15, 21-11.

Girls’ U-16 doubles: Anila/Khizra (Punjab) bt Mehwish Zaman/Monisha Kotia (Sindh) 21-16, 21-18.

Boys’ U-19 singles: Ali Mehdi (Sindh) bt Murad Ali (NWFP) 21-17, 17-21, 21-18.

Boys’ U-19 doubles: Irfan/Arsalan (Punjab) bt Owais Zahid/Taimur (Punjab) 16-21, 21-18, 21-19.

Boys’ U-16 singles: Irfan (Punjab) bt Junaid (Punjab) 21-15, 21-16.

Boys’ U-16 doubles: Subhan/Adnan (Punjab) bt Irfan/Arsalan (Punjab) 21-19, 18-21, 21-17.
