Crime remained under control, claim police

RAWALPINDI, Jan 1: The local police say crime situation in Rawalpindi remained under control in 2007.

A spokesman said 14,862 cases were reported to the police, adding 99 gangs of criminals were busted during the year.

He said out of the 252 murder cases 151 were solved. As many as 3,204 cases related to drug offences and 2,289 cases of illegal weapons were registered. He said 65,235 bottles of liquor were recovered during the year.

The police seized 258 daggers, 42 carbines, 14 Kalashnikovs, 83 rifles, 105 guns and 1,586 revolvers/pistols. While 1,058 proclaimed offenders and 2,490 court offenders were arrested. The police recovered 142 stolen/snatched vehicles and handed them over to their owners. In terms of dishonoured cheques, 255 cases were registered and 51 persons arrested. The police recovered Rs40 million from the accused persons involved in the cases.
