KARACHI: Lyari tense after days of violence
By Our Staff Reporter
KARACHI, Dec 31: Tension prevailed in Lyari Town for the fourth consecutive day on Monday as angry protesters, mostly youths, played hide and seek with the personnel of the law-enforcement agencies in the streets of Baghdadi, Darayabad, Nawabad and some other localities.
After three days of violent incidents, looting and arson, there had been an uneasy calm in the troubled areas on Monday morning and some shops were opened, although public transport remained off the road and a negligible number of private vehicles were seen moving.
Crowds of peoples thronged at the opened shops to buy essential commodities.
However, law-enforcing agencies had to intervene when protesters emerged in the streets and tried to stage demonstrations in the afternoon and criminals took advantage of the situation by resorting to shooting. There were also reports of youths forcing shopkeepers to pull down shutters in Baghdadi area.
Garbage disposal
Heaps of garbage remained unattended at various places in Lyari Town as the disturbances over the past few days had kept municipality workers away from the areas.
Residents of different localities demanded immediately steps for the lifting of garbage and domestic waste which had created an unhygienic condition.
The worst-hit localities include Karabhai Karimji Road, Fida Husain Sheikha Road, Ahmed Shah Bukhari Road and Shah Waliullah Road.
