PESHAWAR, Dec 27: Habib Bank, Wapda, Army and Punjab ‘A’ marched into the semi-finals after recording victories against their respective rivals in the women’s team event quarter-finals of the 45th National Table Tennis Championships here at the PSB Coaching Centre on Thursday.
Habib Bank thrashed PWD 3-0, Wapda defeated Islamabad 3-1, Army overwhelmed NWFP 3-1 and Punjab ‘A’ beat Sindh ‘B’ 3-0.
Defending champions Habib Bank wasted no time in defeating PWD team. Top seed and Ghalia Khursheed beat Noreen Tehsin 11-3, 11-7, 11-2.
Shabnum Bilal, second seed in the event, defeated Shahida Yousuf 11-1, 11-3, 11-5, while Sadia Yasin beat Najiya Khan 13-11, 11-6, 7-11, 11-5.
In the second quarter-final, Punjab ‘A’ beat Sindh ‘B’ when Yasmin overpower Zainab 11-5, 11-2, 11-7, Mobina Hanif downed Maria 7-11, 11-4, 11-2, 11-9 while Madiha outplayed Tahira 11-6, 11-5, 11-4.
Army’s Rubab beat Kashmala 11-4, 11-0, 11-2, eight seeded Seemab overwhelmed Shumaila 11-6, 11-3, 11-2, Nasira Hameed lost to Muneeba in a five-set battle (11-6, 7-11, 11-8, 4-11, 11-6), while in the reverse singles Seemab beat Kashmala 11-2, 11-1, 11-9.
In the men’s team event, Habib Bank and Wapda reached the semi-finals after defeating Pakistan Railways and Sindh ‘A’, respectively. For Wapda Asim Qureshi, Bilal Yasin and Ali Faisal secured victories against Awais Hussain, Suleman Virk and Rameez Khan in straight sets.
Habib Bank’s Shahzad Waseem, Yasir Bhatti and Asim Aziz defeated Asif Hasan, Atta Abbas and Naveed Muzab in straight sets.
Earlier, in the pre-quarter-finals Sindh ‘B’ team comprising Ghulam Ali, Raheel and Haris Pirzada beat NWFP’s Abazad Iqbal, Sohail Shah and Jamal Aziz 3-0.
