Rashid Rauf’s escape: two policemen remanded

RAWALPINDI, Dec 26: Two policemen arrested by the capital territory police in connection with the mysterious disappearance of Rashid Rauf, a key suspect in the alleged plot to blow up trans-Atlantic jetliners, were remanded in police custody for three days by a judicial magistrate on Wednesday.

Assistant sub-inspector Nawabzada and constable Mohammad Tufail were taking Rauf back to the Adiala jail from a court in Islamabad on December 15 when he disappeared.

On Wednesday, an inquiry team accompanied by top ICT police officials visited the international fast-food outlet located at Jinnah Park Rawalpindi and a mosque at Adiala Road, where the accused was allowed to offer his Zuhr prayers by the two police guards.

According to the statement recorded by the two policemen, they had removed the handcuffs of the accused at the restaurant where they took lunch. While heading towards the jail from there, the accused asked the policemen to stop the car near a mosque for prayers from where he escaped.— Staff Reporter
