ISLAMABAD, Dec 25: The army will be stationed at sensitive places across the country, providing assistance to police and Rangers during the elections, caretaker Interior Minister Hamid Nawaz Khan said on Tuesday.

Talking to a local television channel, the minister said the government was confident of holding elections in a peaceful atmosphere. He said that there had been some problems in the Frontier province and Swat, which had been “solved to a great extent”.

Candidates in the Kurram Agency, he said, had started their election campaigns, while peace committees had also been set up there. “We hope the situation would be back to normal prior to the holding of elections.”

Hamid Nawaz said the interior ministry had not received any request from any province till now for the posting of army and Rangers and, therefore, it was difficult to determine the exact number of “sensitive places” in the country, requiring the presence of the army and Rangers personnel.—APP
