In defiance of PbBC’s call

Published December 26, 2007

VEHARI, Dec 25: Dozens of local lawyers are contesting the general election despite a boycott call by the Punjab Bar Council (PbBC).

The PbBC has boycotted the general election and asked lawyers not to take part in the polls till reinstatement of deposed judges. A number of lawyers withdrew their nomination papers on the PbBC’s call, but still dozens of practising and non-practising lawyers are contesting the election from the platforms of various political parties or independently. Lawyer Mehmood Akhtar Ghuman is a Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) candidate in NA-167, while Mukhtar Ahmad Jatt and Tahir Naveed Dogar are running from the same constituency independently.

In PP-233, four lawyers are in the run. They are PML-Q’s Nazir Ahmad Arain, PML-N’s Dr Nazir Mithu Dogar and independent candidates Humayon Shakeel and Tahir Naveed. PML-Q’s Chaudhry Nazar Duggal, PPP’s Nosher Langrial and PML-N’s Ejaz Sultan are in the run in PP-235. Moreover, lawyer Iftikhar Ali is contesting the election from PP-236 from the PPP’s platform.—Correspondent
