LAHORE, Dec 16: Rank outsider bay English mare, Konica opened her debut with a remarkable victory for owner Syed Parvaiz Hussain Shah in the feature event gone over the sprinting distance of 1,000m during the 16th Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse on Sunday’s sunny afternoon.

The eight-year-old imported mare, who raced for the first time over the track in Lahore, was given a gem of a ride by jockey M. Hanif. She beat stable-mate bay English horse, Brummell (Aamir Parvaiz) up by a neck, after nosing out Miss Thailand (Shahid Rehman) up to third position by a short head. Snow Clad, an imported English filly, completed the frame by three-fourths of a length. The even-money favourite bay English mare Rising Tide ran off the frame among seven runners. The winner and the second placed were owned by the same owner and trained by Sohail Aziz.

The beauty of the race was that the event turned out to be very competitive with first five horses coming in line to finish within two lengths distance. This was the seventh and last race of the day, a class I, II and III combined handicap race for imported thoroughbreds.

A race earlier, the bay filly, Poly Cat just managed to get the better of the bay filly Dil Vil in the dying strides to land a courageous victory in the supporting event.

Three-year-old filly Poly Cat, owned by Shoaib Tariq, was given a power packed ride by Shahid Rehman.

Chestnut filly Chill produced a performance of high calibre to be a magnificent winner of the fifth race under a confident ride by the riding boy Anjum. She beat odds-on favourite filly, Chanela, whose rider Shahid Rehman was heckled by the race fans when the horses returned after the race.

Jockey Aamir Parvaiz, the riding boy Anjum and trainer I. Nawab shared the day’s racing honours, when each was accredited with a fine double. Aamir Parvaiz rode home Dillagi and Re-born in the second and fourth race. Anjum piloted home Trump Coup and Chill in the third and fifth race, owned by Masood Pervaiz/Javaid Khalid and trained by I. Nawab. All races were contested over 1,000 metres.

Leading jockey Shahid Rehman returned to the saddle on Sunday after a long time. He had fractured his wrist during a fall in track work and remained out of the saddle for about two months.

He was not seen at his best riding in the four races — he won on one, placed second twice and third on the fourth and the last to end up the day.

After a long time the races attracted a large crowd of equine sports connoisseurs.
