New toll system for motorways planned

By Syed Irfan Raza

ISLAMABAD, Dec 14: The government is introducing a system of prepaid electronic toll collection on all motorways for the convenience of motorists, particularly frequent travellers.

“The system will be introduced in a few days jointly by National Database Registration Authority and National Highway Authority,” Nadra Chairman Brig Salem Ahmed Moeen (retd) said on Thursday.

He said the system would simplify the mode of toll payment, and make accounting easy and foolproof, especially for companies operating fleet of vehicles.

Initially the facility would be provided to people travelling from Islamabad, Lahore, Peshawar, Faisalabad and Pindi Bhattian, he added.

If successful, the system would also be introduced on highways.

Under the system, motorists would get prepaid chips to be fixed on the windscreens. The toll would be deducted automatically without a motorist having to stop at a toll plaza.

The chip will be valid for a long time, till there is balance in the motorist’s account.

Armed forces personnel will continue to enjoy tax exemption and a separate lane will be there for them at toll plazas.
