Big Show eyes Quaid-i-Azam Trial Cup

By Anwar Zuberi

KARACHI, Dec 8: Four-year-old bay filly Big Show is tipped to atone for the loss should she win the Quaid-i-Azam Trial Cup when the Gymkhana race meeting takes place at the Karachi Racecourse on Sunday.

Despite finishing nowhere in the Shah Mardan Shah Pir Pagara Double Birthday Cup on Nov 25, Big Show is fancied to outshine Eswarah in a battle of endurance in the 10 furlongs race.

Eswarah posted a half length victory over Dream Rose to land the cup in her last outing under rider Arshad in the one mile contest. This time Ghulam Shabbir II will be in the saddle. Jockey Nasir will aboard Big Show.

With two successive second places under her belt, two-year-old bay filly Flawless Victory looks a good thing to lift The Sapphire Stakes, restricted for two-year-old colts and fillies.

The biggest threat to Flawless Victory is likely to come from two-year-old bay colt Discreet Cat having won his maiden race by three lengths last month.

They are likely to be chased by colt John Player.

With two back-to-back triumphs under his belt, three-year-old bay colt Fair Diamond should repeat his feat for a hat-trick by picking up The Colts and Fillies Trial Cup.

Dream Rose, a three-year bay colt, should pose serious challenge to Fair Diamond in the seven furlongs race which has a shortest field of four runners.

The three cups will serve as a curtain-raiser for the biggest spectacle of the year which is to take place on Dec 25.

A card of 10 races has been drawn for the days meeting with the first race taking place at 11.30am.

Trained by jockey Allah Judrio, three-year-old bay filly Sweetie Pie should make amends by picking up the spoils in the opener.

The filly with a five wins and nine placing to date has the potential to beat the field.

Her likely challengers are Thanks Naeem and Princess Rozi. Though filly Friendly Fire was also among the eight aspirants, she was found lacking in her performance and finished off the board in the last three runs.

Having proved her mettle by scoring three wins on the trot, filly Crown Prince is poised to come out with another courageous performance in the second race.

Three-year-old bay colt Cash Flow is also in line to claim honours and make it a two-in-a-row with the fourth. He will be ridden home by Lahore’s jockey Shahid Rehman.

Eager Saint, King Of Cool, Arabia Butterfly and Little Girl should oblige punters in their respective races.
