LARKANA, Dec 8: The eighth three-day Chandka Medical College (CMC) Larkana symposium concluded here on Saturday with the recommendations to upgrade college to the status of a medical university in the light of the announcement made by President Pervez Musharraf during his visit to Larkana.

Professor of Surgery, Muhammed Medical College Mirpurkhas, chaired the session devoted to the theme of the symposium ‘creation of medical university — need of the hour’.

Professor Surgeon Sikandar Shaikh, Principal of CMC Larkana read out his paper and underlined the need for urgent announcement of a medical university.

The symposium recommended that all medical institutions of Pakistan may be upgraded to the level of university in order to promote research, improve quality of education and bring all institutions at par. In case it is not possible to upgrade all institutions, at least they should be made constituent colleges of some focal universities, the symposium recommended.

The CMC Principal suggested that Chandka Medical University should consist of Chandka Medical College, Larkana, Ghulam Muhammed Mahar Medical College Sukkur, Chandka Dental College, Gambat Institute of Medical Sciences including, nursing schools, paramedics’ schools and Lady Health Visitor’s schools of upper Sindh.

Dr Syed Razi Mohammad said that the establishment of Chandka Medical University would be a major step to open doors for the population consisting of 70 per cent of population.
