KARACHI, Dec 5: Sewerage system of the old city areas collapsed once again on Tuesday.
It was for the third time during the last couple of months that the sewerage system had collapsed because of its poor maintenance and obsolete sewer lines which, according to the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board officials, had already out-lived their life.
Filthy water gushing out from choked gutters not only created unhygienic condition in several residential and commercial areas of Saddar Town but also disrupted the flow of vehicular traffic on M.A. Jinnah Road, Shahrah-i-Iraq, Shahrah-i-Liaquat, Sir Abdullah Haroon Road, Daudpota Road, Mir Karam Ali Talpur Road, Preedy Street and Dr Ziauddin Ahmed Road.
Traffic jams were witnessed on M.A. Jinnah Road as sewage accumulated near Plaza Cinema, Tibet Centre, Saeed Manzil and Motandas Market, Mithadar and Kharadar police stations left little space for commuters to travel on.
Even worse was the situation at Urdu Bazaar and Bohri Bazaar where visitors had to wade through the stagnant filth water accumulated in narrow streets.
People residing in Ranchore Lines, Mithadar, Kharadar, near Haqani Chowk, Pakistan Chowk and Burnes Road also faced the mess created by overflowing sewers.
They complained that one needed to have the nerves of steel to enter their locality while KWSB officials seemed least interested in replacement of outdated lines despite the repeated complaints lodged with them.
They apprehended that area people were exposed to serious health hazards and the situation warranted earliest possible solution.
Hussainabad residents also complained that different streets of their locality, particularly the surroundings of Memon Markaz and Dehli Government College, often remained submerged with sewage.
Attributing the cause of overflowing sewers to a nearby damaged sewage line, they claimed that the KWSB officials concerned had failed to replace it for the last two months though repeated complaints had been lodged with them.
