ISLAMABAD, Dec 2: Top seed Aqeel Khan defeated Asim Shafik in straight sets to capture the men’s singles crown of the Subh-i-Nau National clay court tennis championship at Islamabad Club on Sunday.

It was Aqeel’s second back-to-back national title as he had won the Federal Cup a week ago at PTF Complex.

Aqeel Khan thrashed Asim 6-0, 6-1 in a one-sided final. Aqeel Khan never allowed his opponent to settle down by hitting powerful shots.

He continued with the same tempo in the second set and twice broke the serve of his opponent to wrap up the set 6-1.

Asim who was looking bit worn-out in the final encounter put stiff resistance against the top-ranked national player.

Earlier, in the morning Aqeel stunned Muhammad Shafik 6-0, 6-1, while Asim downed Jalil Khan in a stiff three sets encounter to claim a place in the final.

Second seed Jalil Khan, the younger brother of Aqeel, won the first set at 6-4 by breaking the eighth game of third seeded Asim.

But Asim won the second set in similar style at 6-4 and levelled the match. In the third set, both players tried their best but Asim showed resilience to emerge an overall 4-6, 6-4 , 6-3 winner.

Anoosha Aslam claimed the ladies’ singles title by beating Ushna Sohail in three-set final. Anoosha lost the first set 3-6 but won the second 6-3 and then displayed excellent skills to clinch the final set 6-3 to lift the title.

Fahad Ali grabbed the boys Under-17 title by defeating Ahmed Aslam in the final. Ahmed won the first set 6-2 through some powerful serves and shots from the base-line.

However, in the second set, Fahad regained his form to win the second set 6-3 and finished the final set with 6-3 win.

Under-13 competition was bagged by Nameer Shamsi who defeated Kashanul Haq in the final held on Saturday.

Nameer did well after losing the first set 3-5 as he won the second and third sets 4-1 and 4-0 to walk away with the trophy.—APP
