KARACHI: Six gangsters arrested in Lyari

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Nov 30: In a renewed crackdown against street crime, the police on Friday claimed to have arrested six culprits allegedly involved in Lyari gang warfare. A senior official said that acting on a tip-off the police conducted raids on gangsters’ dens and arrested the six people from Baghdadi, Chawkiwara and Kalri areas of the town.

“Three of the men arrested from Chawkiwara were wanted drug traffickers”, said a Lyari Town police official.

“Similarly, two were detained in Baghdadi while one suspect arrested in Kalri area was wanted in several cases by the Chawkiwara police,” he said.

Those arrested in the raids are Mohammad Tanvir, Mohammad Ashraf, Hafeezullah, Sohail Ahmed, Ada alias Gada Gadhi Wala and Zubair Ali,

Police have also recovered an AK-47 rifle and four TT pistols from the culprits.

The police action came a day after an aged woman was shot at in Kalakot area of Lyari after gangsters were refused extortion by her businessman husband. The woman is reportedly in a critical condition.

According to witnesses, a group of some half a dozen armed gangsters entered the offices of Shakir Goods Transport near Al Jameel Hotel in Kalakot and asked for extortion money. Fed up with the increasing demands of such unscrupulous elements, the transporter, however, refused to pay anything.

“There are several groups, which are not strong in position but large in numbers,” said Fayyaz Khan, SP Lyari Town.
