160 flights cancelled in Italy

ROME, Nov 30: More than 160 flights in and out of Rome’s main airport were cancelled on Friday as a transport strike hit across Italy, the airport news agency Telenews said.

Pilots, other flight crew and ground staff joined the strike and flights by Alitalia, the Italian state airline, accounted for 109 of the 162 cancellations recorded, the agency said.

The four-hour stoppage is to protest cuts in transport sector spending under the government’s 2008 budget and to demand larger commitments from the state over the crisis engulfing Alitalia.—AFP
