ISLAMABAD, Nov 29: Top seeds Aqeel Khan, Nomi Qamar, Asim Shafiq, Jalil Khan, Tanveer Ashiq, Inam Gul and Yasir Khan moved into the quarter-finals of men’s singles event of the Subh-e-Nau-National Bank National Clay Court Tennis Championship here at Islamabad on Thursday.
Top seed Aqeel Khan ousted Hassan Saeed in straight sets 2-1 in a single sided affair while second seed Nomi Qamar outplayed Taimoor Mahmood 2-0 in the same style at 6-4 and 6-1. The match between Asim Skafik and Hamid ul Haq saw a close contest, as an injury enforced former Davis Cupper Hamaid-ul-Haq to leave the court. The match was levelled 1-1 sets and third set score was also levelled at 5-5. The final score-line was 6-7, 7-6 and 5-5.
However, in the ladies single fixtures, Sara Mansoor had to work hard to overcome Mahvish Chishtie in two sets to reach the semi-final of the women’s singles event. The first set ended at tie break at 7-5. Both players displayed quality game and played some powerful strokes from the base-line. The second set went up to 3-3 each but at this stage Sara did well and finished the match in style by holding her two games and breaking one of her opponent.
The quarter-finals of the men’s singles event and semi-finals of women’s singles, Boys’ Under-17 and Under-13 will be played on Friday (today) at the same venue. —Agencies
