Dawn Report

HYDERABAD, Nov 29: On the call of the Pakistan Bar Council, lawyers boycotted court proceedings in different parts of Sindh on Thursday to protest against President Mussharaf’s oath-taking, imposition of emergency in the country and dismissal of judges of apex and high courts.

In Hyderabad, the lawyers observed a complete boycott of court proceedings as none of them appeared before civil, session or high courts.

The lawyers held a general body at the Hyderabad district bar room. They condemned detention of those judges who had refused to take oath under the Provisional Constitution Order and expressed solidarity with them. After the imposition of emergency in the country, the lawyers have been observing complete boycott of courts on every Thursday and one-hour token boycott on the rest of week days.

In Nawabshah, the District Bar Association demanded immediate withdrawal of Bar Council Ordinance, lifting of emergency and restoration of Constitution and deposed judges.

A general body of lawyers, presided over by DBA secretary Ziaul Hassan Lanjar, condemned the amended Bar Council Ordinance and demanded its immediate withdrawal.

The meeting unanimously passed resolutions, demanding restoration of Constitution and deposed judges and lifting of emergency. The lawyers expressed solidarity with media and called for lifting of restrictions on electronic media.

Earlier, the lawyers boycotted court proceedings.
