KARACHI, Nov 27: On the concluding day of the second phase of its campaign against emergency and curbs on the media, the PFUJ will observe ‘black day’ on Wednesday.
It said that black flags would be hoisted atop all media offices in the country and journalists would wear black armbands during their duty hours.
Meanwhile, political and labour leaders, lawyers and activists continued to visit the protest camps set up by journalist community at the Karachi Press Club. Spouses of those judges who have declined to take oath under the PCO also visited the camp and expressed solidarity with the media people in their struggle for press freedom and restoration of constitutional rights.
Retired justices Wajihuddin Ahmed , Fakhruddin G. Ibrahim, Majida Rizvi and other judges and lawyers who were present on the occasion, assured the protesting journalists of full support from the genuine bench and bar.
A meeting of the KUJ’s Dawn unit on Tuesday resolved to continue the struggle until withdrawal of all media curbs and the PCO, restoration of all news channels and implementation of the seventh wage award.
Speaking at meeting, PFUJ Secretary-General Mazhar Abbas said the organisation and its affiliated unions would continue their struggle, even after the restoration of all channels, till the achievement of complete freedom of the media. The meeting condemned the police action against journalists in different parts of the country for raising their voice against the decrees issued on and after Nov 3, when a state of emergency was announced.
