PESHAWAR, Nov 27: Police have failed to trace about half a dozen cars lifted from the University of Peshawar in the last two months, sources said.
They said that latest in the series was lifting of two cars from the campus — one on Monday and the other last week. In some cases, police had not even registered FIRs, they added.
They said that despite the fact that the university had about 400 regular policemen and 100 watchmen, the lack of coordination between police and the university administration had failed to improve the law and order situation on the campus.
However, a police official alleged that the university administration did not cooperate with police in implementing certain measures on the campus. He said that under the law police needed to seek permission from the university administration before taking an action on the campus. In many cases, he added, the administration did not allow police to take actions on the campus.
He said there were also reports of some unlawful activities on the campus, including sale of hashish, liquor and other contraband. But, he added, police were unable to check these activities without taking permission from the university administration.
In the wake of increasing incidents of theft, boundary walls have been erected around the University of Peshawar, the University of Engineering and Technology and the NWFP Agricultural University. A Cam-pus Peace Corps (CPC) has been established to cope with unlawful activities.
A Campus Coordination Committee (CCC) comprising officials of the CPC and the three universities has also been also set up.
The director administration in the Peshawar University, Iftikhar Hussain Khan, told Dawn that he had convened a meeting of police officials and provosts of the three universities to discuss the problem of car-lifting. “We are going to devise a joint strategy to end this menace,” he added.
