STP to boycott elections

Bureau Report

HYDERABAD, Nov 26: Sindh Taraqqi Pasand Party chairman Dr Qadir Magsi said on Monday that his party would boycott the general elections, which were being held under emergency with constitution and fundamental human rights suspended and judiciary and media under curbs.

In a statement Mr Magsi said such elections would be bogus and fraudulent. It was impossible for a government under emergency to hold free, fair and transparent elections, he added.

So, the STP would not take part in the bogus elections, which were only aimed at providing legitimacy to the unconstitutional and illegal rule of Gen Pervez Musharraf, he said.

He said that the All-Parties Democratic Movement at its meeting held on Nov 24 had agreed in principle to boycott the elections. However, a final decision in this regard would be taken at the APDM’s meeting scheduled to be held in Lahore after two days, he said. He said that Gen Musharraf was not ready to lift emergency, withdraw PCO or restore the independence of judiciary and media.
