HYDERABAD: NGOs’ alliance observes black day

Bureau Report

HYDERABAD, Nov 26: The Joint Action Committee, Sindh, observed ‘black day’ against the promulgation of emergency and for the independence of judiciary and media, on Monday.

A press release of the committee said black flags were hoisted at the offices of Indus Development Organisation, South Asia Partnership, SANGAF, Strengthening Participatory Organisation, Bhandar Hari Sangat, Pakistan Labour Party, Communist Party, Sindh Taraqi Passand House, Sindh Community Foundation and other organisations.

It said the civil society activists wore black armbands while a protest meeting was held at the secretariat of the Joint Action Committee Qasimabad.

Speaking on the occasion, the coordinator of the committee, Zain Daudpoto, Dr Khalil Qazi, Punhal Sario, Fateh Mari, Adam Malik and others said the promulgation of emergency was a frontal attack on the fundamental rights and had greatly harmed the image of the country.

They said emergency was in fact martial law under which powers of judiciary and media had been curtailed. They said the curbs on judiciary and media were not the problem of judges and journalists alone but of every Pakistani.
