KARACHI: Closure of vital road cause of traffic mess

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Nov 26: The closure of a major portion of Shahrah-i-Pakistan, linking the city with Super Highway, has not only added to the miseries of the citizens already perturbed by the traffic mess in the city but the people residing on either side of the road (from Aisha Manzil to Sohrab Goth) are also facing great hardships due to prolonged traffic jams.

With Eidul Azha approaching, it is feared that the situation will further aggravate when thousands of Suzuki vans and other vehicles carrying sacrificial animals will start plying on the route to and from the huge cattle market being set up in Scheme-33 beyond Sohrab Goth.

Apart from the hustle and bustle of Eid, it would be pertinent to mention here that upcountry bound buses and other heavy traffic ply on the same route on a daily basis.

Though the track of the road has been closed for its re-construction from Aisha Manzil to Water pump traffic intersection, heavy vehicular traffic remain stuck up for hours on a major portion of the road i.e. from Karimabad to Sohrab Goth. As no alternative route to the under-construction portion of the road has been carved out, vehicular traffic proceeding to and from Karimabad and Sohrab Goth are nowadays plying on a single track between busy traffic intersections of Aisha Manzil and Water Pump.

Whenever the traffic moving towards the Sohrab Goth via Karimabad comes to a halt on a long portion of the road, vehicular traffic approaching Shahrah-i-Pakistan from different directions i.e. either from Tahir Villa or Yasinabad or from Gulberg or Federal B Area No 16, also faces immense difficulties in crossing Aisha Manzil and Water pump traffic intersections which usually remains blocked with the heavy traffic meant for Sohrab Goth.

The other problems that are caused due to this nightmarish traffic mess are noise pollution and emission from the hundreds of stationary vehicles.

However, people residing in the vicinity of Azizabad, Nasirabad and Dastagir are the worst-affected as a large number of vehicles enter their localities, causing traffic jams.
