Janu Manu claims feature event with fantastic finish

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, Nov 25: In a most promising performance, the fancied colt Janu Manu, duly landed the Dewan Petroleum Cup when he ran over 1,200m before a cheering crowd during the 13th Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse on Sunday.

Off to a flying start, Janu Manu was neck in neck for a while with the filly Discovery, who then buckled under pressure, to take the lead. Janu Manu’s fantastic finish gave him an impressive nine lengths’ win against Discovery. Janu Manu, which is owned by Khalid Malik, is showing great promise to shape up into the stables ace card in the on-going winter meetings. This was Janu Manu’s third win in a row.

The colt Motivator and the bay Intikhab-i-Bhakkar completed the frame among the eight starters. Trained by Azhar Ali the colt was ridden by M. Waseem Khan.

Earlier in the fourth race, the bay filly Bold Act won the Khalid Bin Waleed Cup contested over 1,300m. Doing all the running and staying on well, she beat Lucky Cat by a distance in vivid contrast to her last week’s performance when she was beaten to third place behind Reborn and Miss Play in the over 1,200m race. Iconic and Mirana Choice finished third and fourth, respectively.

Two-year-old colt Cut Throat proved to be a speedy juvenile sprinter when he won the Nursery Plate in the over 1,000m race for two-year-old thoroughbred colts and fillies, yet maidens.

Ridden well by jockey M. Hanif, he beat filly Dixie by three lengths. Armaan finished third with My Delilah ending up fourth. Eleven ran after the last-minute withdrawal of Heaven’s Heart. Syed Tasweer Hussain’s colt was trained by Sohail Aziz.

The three-year-old fancied colt Extravagant, ridden with ease by jockey M. Zeeshan, pipped Shah Pari at the finishing line with Sohna Billoo third. Owned by Javaid Khalid, the colt was eased by Zeeshan before crossing the finishing post but to the good luck of his backers, he won by a head. Otherwise his jockey’s overconfidence would have cost the race.

Trainer Sohail Aziz kept his march on top of the trainers’ statistics table, registering a double through Cut Throat and Shim Jim, winning the second and third race, respectively.

Jockey M. Zeeshan brought in a brace of winners. He piloted Extravagant in the opener and Shim Jim in the third race. Of sixes was won by four favourites.
