PESHAWAR, Nov 23: Muttahidda Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) president Qazi Hussain Ahmad has said that fair and impartial elections are impossible under the Provisional Constitution Order.

Talking to journalists at the Markz-i-Islami on Friday, he said the All Parties Democratic Movement would soon decide whether to contest the elections or boycott them.

He alleged that the government had planned to get its favourite people elected.

He criticized the United States for giving a free hand to President Pervez Musharraf and keeping quiet over his undemocratic and unconstitutional steps. He also accused the US of supporting the imposition of martial law and curbs on the media.He said he was in contact with Pakistan People’s Party chairperson Benazir Bhutto, Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) president Mian Nawaz Sharif, Awami National Party president Asfandyar Wali Khan and Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaaf chief Imran Khan and hoped that a unified stand would be taken on the elections.

He said a case would be registered against Gen Musharraf for attacking the judiciary, imposing martial law and suspending the Constitution.

He condemned the use of state machinery against activists of political parties, lawyers and journalists who were maltreated and beaten up by police. He said the Jamaat could play an affective role for peace in Waziristan, Malakand and Parachinar.

Meanwhile, the MMA’s NWFP chapter formed a committee to work out a policy for seat adjustment. Provincial MMA chief Senator Gul Naseeb Khan said at a press conference that the alliance was in contact with other political parties and it would be possible to reach an understanding with them at the local level.
