KARACHI, Nov 23: Police guards of the Hyderabad district police officer killed two attackers and arrested the injured accomplice following a shootout with them on the Super Highway near Sabzi Mandi late on Friday night.

The Hyderabad DPO, the apparent target of the attackers, escaped unhurt in the attack.

“I was proceeding toward Hyderabad in my private vehicle along with my gunmen when my vehicle came under attack from behind,” DPO Imran Shaukat said.

He said the guards returned fire killing one of the suspects on the spot and wounding two others, one of whom died shortly afterwards. The other wounded suspect was immediately arrested from behind the bushes as he started screaming.

The DPO said that the suspects were following him closely on motorcycles and a car coming behind at a distance perhaps was giving them a cover. He said he was not clear about the motive of the attempt yet it seemed to have links with the police operation conducted against bandits in Hyderabad.

Cops’ killing suspects held

Police arrested two men suspected to have been involved in the killing of two policemen on Nov 18 in Garden area during snap-checking, on Friday.

SP Lyari Fayyaz Khan told Dawn that police on a tip-off picked up two suspects Habib alias Dakait and Yasir alias Kala from their hideout in Dhobi Gath area. Their third accomplice identified as Aqeel could not be apprehended for whom raids were being carried out, the SP added.

“The trio had been associated with the Arshad Pappu gang. But these days, they have teamed up to commit robberies,” SP Fayyaz said.

The accused had allegedly gunned down Head Constable Zulfiqar and Constable Adam Ali, who were on duty in Usmanabad, and taken away their official AK-47.

Police claimed to have recovered the weapon used in the killing from the possession of the suspects but believed that the AK-47 was with their absconding accomplice, Aqeel.

‘Robber’ killed

An alleged robber was gunned down in Gulshan-i-Iqbal on Friday night.

Police said a man was reportedly being deprived of his valuables when he shot at the bandit and sped away. The incident took place on the jurisdiction line between Gulshan and Mubina town police.

SP Gulshan-i-Iqbal Noman Siddiqui said the person who was being robbed reportedly shot the bandit at point blank range and didn’t wait at the spot for the police to arrive. He simply sped away. Police shifted the body to the Jinnah Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Hospital sources said the suspect could not be identified immediately.
