KARACHI: Pagara warns of pre-poll ‘natural disasters’

KARACHI, Nov 22: The chief of the Pakistan Muslim League (Functional), Pir Pagara, has said that the “formalities” of elections were being carried out but warned that “untoward incidents” and “natural disasters” could occur any time without warning.
“It doesn’t require permission. It can happen any time, anywhere,” he said cryptically replying to a query during a party to celebrate his 79th and his daughter Amna’s second birthday.
Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad and caretaker Chief Minister Abdul Quadir Halepota also attended the birthday dinner at Pagara’s residence, Kingri House. Former chief minister Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim and members of the recently dissolved provincial cabinet also attended the celebration.
Meanwhile, the Sindh governor avoided commenting on Benazir Bhutto’s allegation that the caretaker set-up is indulging in pre-poll rigging. Instead, he advised the political parties to participate in the forthcoming general elections.
“We are heading towards elections so everyone should be prepared for that event. The caretaker government has been set up in continuation of the democratic transition of power”, he added.
Jamaat-i-Islami leader Professor Ghafoor Ahmed, Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s Sheikh Liaquat Hussain, Director-General Rangers Major-General Liaquat Ali, Ilahi Buksh Soomro, British Deputy High Commissioner Hamish Daniel, Hakim Ali Zardari and Sardar Khan Mangal Meher also attended the dinner.
