KARACHI: Man gunned down in school over enmity

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Nov 22: A 40-year-old man was shot dead on Thursday at a private school in Peerabad where he had taken his five-year-old son for admission, police and witnesses said.

Police said that Akhtar Moeen, hailing from Swat, was targeted and killed allegedly by suspect Arshad and an unknown accomplice due to an old feud. They said both the suspects fled the scene.

The body was shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for an autopsy. Hospital sources said the victim, who was an animal trader, received four bullets: two to the head, one in the neck and the other in his left armpit. They said all four bullets went through the body as they were shot from a very close range.

Area SHO Inspector Rustam Khan told Dawn that the victim, resident of Bukhari Colony, had taken his son to the Morning Star School in Frontier Colony for admission. “Around 8.45am when he was inside the room of the principal, Arshad came in and opened fire on Akhtar killing him instantly”, he added.

Mr Khan said the suspects were believed to have been following the victim since he left his house. “Arshad went after Akhtar in the principal’s room, while his accomplice waited for him outside on a motorcycle”, he said.

He said the victim’s son recognized one of the suspects and a case against Arshad and his unknown accomplice was registered on the complaint of the victim’s brother Bacha Khan.

Decomposed body

The partially decomposed body of an unknown man was found on Thursday at a desolate place in the Korangi Industrial Area.

A watchman of a piece of land belonging to the livestock department behind the Power House near Awami Colony discovered the stinking body in the morning.

The body was shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre where sources said the victim was also severely tortured before being strangled.

They said the face of the victim, who appeared to be in his early 40s, was severely damaged, apparently by acid.

The police said the victim was clad in light khaki-coloured shalwar kameez with all his pockets emptied. They said the culprits made all possible efforts to erase any clue which could lead to the victim’s identity.

The body was later kept at the Edhi Morgue at Sohrab Goth for want of identification.

Man wounded

A 25-year-old vegetable seller was shot and wounded by two bandits near the New Sabzi Mandi.

The injured man was shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where he was identified as Nizamuddin.

Sohrab Goth police said the robbers held the vegetable seller hostage at gunpoint and asked him to hand over his valuables and cash.

They said the bandits became jittery and opened fire when the victim offered resistance.

Hospital sources said the victim, who had sustained a bullet wound in his arm, was discharged from the hospital after being given medical treatment.
