‘Civilian president by Saturday’

ISLAMABAD, Nov 21: President Gen Pervez Musharraf could quit as Chief of the Army Staff and take an oath as a civilian president by Saturday, a senior official said. Another official said authorities had freed most of the thousands of people detained under emergency rule, meeting another key demand of Gen Musharraf’s US backers and domestic opponents. The Supreme Court is expected to clear the last legal obstacles to Gen Musharraf’s continued rule as president on Thursday. The EC can then confirm his victory in a disputed October presidential election.—AP
