Headingly wins Tariq bin Zayad Cup

LAHORE, Nov 18: Three-year-old colt, Headingly ridden by jockey M. Hanif landed the Tariq Bin Zayad Cup run over 1400m during the 12th Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse on Sunday.

Off to a fine start, Headingly went in to a commanding lead and by the time he entered in to the straight, he was striding so easily and effortlessly that it was to be seen when the jockey would unleash his mount.

Headingly finally won by eight lengths from stablemate Lucifer. The filly discovery finished third, a distance behind while the filly Dil Vil completed the frame seven lengths further back among six starters. The winner trained by Khadim Hussain clocked one minute 27 seconds for the distance in this fifth race of the day.

Both the horses placed first and second are owned by the Lahore Race Club (LRC) chairman, Tariq Aziz. Lucifer was the odds-on favourite.

In the supporting and sixth race, the favourite filly, Poly Cat stormed home to win the Tariq Bin Zayad Plate, a class four division two handicap race gone over 1400m.

Soon after the start of the race, the filly strode clear of her rivals and lengthened away to win by over four lengths. The manner in which she strode bears no discussion as she had won a long way out to take her win tally to two in a row. The bay horse, Intikhab-e-Bhakkar, with the jockey Aamir Pervaiz in the saddle finished second over four lengths behind with Royal Fish and Prince Of Bhakkar completing the board.

Sunday proved a lucky day for two jockeys, two owners and two trainers, each recgistering a double. Jockey M.Hanif and M. Zeeshan scored double piloting home Headingly and Poly Cat, both owned by Tariq Aziz and trained by Khadim Hussain.

M. Zeeshan rode Extravagant in the opener and Honey Gal in the seventh and last race of the day owned by Javaid Khalid and trained by I. Nawab.

Jockey Aamir Parvaiz broke his duck on the Jockeys Statistics Table piloting dark-bay colt Reborn to a start to finish victory in the fourth race of the day. By any standards that was a smart success. The colt spared three lengths over the filly Miss Poly while the favourite colt Bold Act finished a bad third.

Two firm favourites, Extravagant and Poly Cat and a second favourite, Honey Gal won in a card of seven events. Three-year-old bay filly, Janu, gave a big surprise to her owner Munir Ahmad Dar, former national hockey skipper, winning the third race. She beat Trump Coup by three-fourth of a length Mannan the Prince and Willhewish completed the frame. The favourite colt Scooby Do ran off the frame among 16 starters.
