KARACHI, Nov 18: The journalist community on Sunday announced its plan to take out a procession on Tuesday as part of its ongoing campaign against restrictions on print and electronic media and denial of the implementation of the seventh wage board award.
On the call of the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ), the Karachi Union of Journalists has also planned holding of protest demonstrations and rallies. The route of the Tuesday rally would be decided in the morning, said KUJ President Shamim-ur-Rahman, adding that at a final programme for a series of protest meetings, rallies and demonstrations would be announced on Monday.
KUJ General-Secretary Javed Chaudhri said the PFUJ would give directives for a future course of action after Nov 20.
President of the Press Photographers Association Murjeebur Rahman has also supported the PFUJ call.
Meanwhile, a meeting held at the KPC on Sunday expressed its deep grief and sorrow over the death of the widow of slain journalist Hayatullah Khan Dawar in a bomb blast in North Waziristan on Saturday night. It condemned the continuing crackdown on media people, and urged the government to do away with its policy of confrontation. It also slammed the ban on media people’s entry into the Sindh High Court.
Later, the journalists staged a protest demonstration outside the KPC against closure of two major TV news channels and curbs on other media organs.
