PESHAWAR: Journalists protest new assault on media

Bureau Report

PESHAWAR, Nov 17: Journalists on Saturday took out a procession from the Peshawar Press Club to denounce the latest assault on the electronic media, including the closure of some news TV channels.

Carrying placards inscribed with slogans against the military rulers, the protesters marched up to The Mall. However, police stopped them from heading towards the Governor’s House.

Speaking on the occasion, Khyber Union of Journalists general secretary Nasir Hussain condemned the fresh assault on the media.

They said that prominent journalists and anchors should be in the Pakistan Broadcasting Association to accelerate the movement for the press freedom.

Earlier, the journalists observed a four-hour token strike for the fourth consecutive day on Saturday to press their demands. Leaders of the Pakistan People’s Party and Awami National Party visited their camp and endorsed their demands.

In Karak, PML-N provincial vice-president Shamsur Rehman Khattak condemned the ban on leading TV channels.

In a statement, he said that the dictator had made the last attempt to turn the situation in his favour.
