PESHAWAR: Journalists continue protest

Bureau Report

PESHAWAR, Nov 15: The journalist community held a protest camp for the second day here on Thursday against the imposition of emergency rule, ‘assault on the judiciary’ and ‘chaining of the press’ through new laws.

The Khyber Union of Journalists set up a four-hour token protest camp outside the Peshawar Press Club on Shershah Soori Road.

Members of the union wore black armbands to protest against the growing intervention of the state in the domains of parliament, the media and judiciary.

Senior columnist Younus Qiasi; Pakistan People’s Party leaders Najmuddin Khan, Zainul Abideen, Syed Ayub Shah and Ghani Gul Mehsud; Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam’s Jalil Jan, Jamaat-i-Islami’s Dost Mohammad and representatives of non-government organisations visited the camp and expressed solidarity with the journalists.

Speaking on the occasion, KhUJ secretary Nasir Hussain announced that a general body meeting of the union would be held after Friday prayers.
