PESHAWAR: Couple arrested for killing daughter

Bureau Report

PESHAWAR, Nov 14: A couple charged with torturing their minor daughter to death was arrested after their pre-arrest bail application was dismissed by a local court on Wednesday.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Fazal Sattar Khan observed that the applicants did not deserve concession of pre-arrest bail at this stage.

The accused, Dr Arshid, father of deceased girl Faiza, and her stepmother Ms Shumaila, were charged after the post-mortem report showed that she was tortured to death.

The eight-year-old girl had died a few days ago in mysterious circumstances.

Her father claimed that she had received injuries in an accident her school which caused her death.

The grandmother of the girl had filed a complaint with the police and suspected that her son and daughter-in-law had tortured her to death.

The real mother of the victim was divorced by Dr Arshid.

On a court order on Nov 2, the body was exhumed and an autopsy conducted.

The post-mortem showed that the baby had torture marks on her body.

The Pahari Pura police station registered an FIR against the couple charging them with the murder.

The counsel for applicants said that the complainant (grandmother) had agreed to enter into a compromise with them.

Advocate Shahnawaz Khan appeared for Mujahida Afsheen, real mother of the girl, and argued that the complainant was not legal heir of the deceased and she had no legal authority to forgive the accused.

He said the baby had been in custody of the accused and there was no doubt that she was killed by them.

Mr Khan said that Dr Arshid had changed his statements many times and added that initially he stated that she had fallen in school, but according to the school administration, she had not been attending the school for the last 10-15 days.

He then stated that the girl started vomiting at home and died , the counsel argued.

The complainant said that a few months ago her son (Dr Arshid) had come to her home and after exchange of hot words on some domestic issue he took away his daughter.

She claimed that she had heard that her granddaughter was often tortured by Dr Arshid and his second wife.
