HYDERABAD, Nov 14: Tributes were paid by the members of civil society to deposed Supreme Court judge, Justice Ghulam Rabbani for refusing to take fresh oath under the Provisional Constitution Order (PCO).
People had gathered at the judge’s residence in Qasimabad, on Tuesday under the auspices of Sindh Democratic Forum (SDF).
Those present included Ibrahim Joyo, SDF’s Abrar Kazi and Zulfikar Halepoto, Dr Qamar Wahid, Dr Qasim Bughio, PPP’s Maula Bux Chandio and a large number of people.They showered rose petals outside the house of deposed judge and lit lamps to pay him tributes.
They condemned the imposition of emergency and demanded restoration of democratic rule.
They said elections should be held in free and fair manner and all judges sacked after the PCO be reinstated.
They voted to get all sacked judges reinstated once democracy was restored.
They said people considered these judges as the real judiciary.
Justice Rabbani, who hails from Hyderabad, was recently elevated to the Supreme Court as ad-hoc judge.
PPP LEADER: Pakistan People’s Party MNA Nawab Abdul Ghani Talpur said on Wednesday that the government’s extra-constitutional steps for the sake of perpetuating one man rule had isolated Pakistan in the world, reports our bureau.
In a faxed statement, Mr Talpur said that the government’s unwarranted steps had proved extremely harmful for the country and Pakistan could not afford international isolation under any circumstances.
He urged Gen Pervez Musharraf to ensure rule of law, justice and democratic dispensation in the country.
HUNGER STRIKE: A large number of journalists and photographers observed token hunger strike in the press club on Wednesday in protest against curbs on media and arrest and torture of journalists.
They raised slogans against and demanded that the curbs on media especially private TV channels should be lifted and arrested journalists should be released.
EXAMS: The Sindh Agriculture University Tandojam on Wednesday announced schedule regular examinations of 2005-06 and 2007 for second term, second semester for all classes of BSc, BE and DVM of the university as well as Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Agriculture College, Dokri.
According to schedule, the students could submit forms with prescribed regular fee of Rs350 from Nov 17 to 20 and with late fee of Rs150 from Nov 21 to 23, and especial late fee of Rs1,000 from Nov 24 onwards. The examination would be held on Nov 26, it said.
The university also extended to Nov 24 the last date for depositing forms for new admission for the academic year of 2007-08. Entry test would be held in different districts of the province on Dec 2, while classes would start from Jan 1, 2008.
NEW DIRECTOR CRITICISED: The employees of the Sindh Textbook Board criticised the appointment on deputation of the board’s director of technical and demanded that all the people working on deputation in the board should be repatriated to their departments.
A general body meeting of the employees on Tuesday pointed out that appointments of lecturers on deputation had seriously harmed education and claimed that it was also flagrant violation of relevant rules and regulations.
The meeting demanded that the secretary education should recall all the college lecturers.
