KARACHI: Shifting of juvenile prisoners condemned

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Nov 11: A child rights group has condemned the reported shifting of juvenile inmates from the Borstal Jail to the Central Jail Bahawalpur for ‘accommodating the imprisoned lawyers’.

“We strongly condemned the evacuation of juvenile offenders from Borstal Jail Bahawalpur,” stated the Society for the Protection of the Rights of the Child on Saturday.

According to a statement issued by the Sparc, 80 juvenile inmates were being shifted from the Borstal Jail to the Central Jail Bahawalpur so that the lawyers arrested from different parts of Punjab for agitating against emergency rule could be confined there. “The juveniles will be forced to stay with adult prisoners in the central jail where no separate lockups for them exist and which could be detrimental to their safety,” it said.

More than 100 lawyers had been shifted to Borstal Jail Bahawalpur so far, added the statement.
